First of all, I have to say that I absolutely LOVE Vacation Bible School (VBS). I was a VBS junkie when I was a kid . . . my mom would send my sisters and I to a few of them around town during the summer to give us stuff to do . . loved it! Our church has done one for three years now since Jeremy and I have been there and we have a lot of fun with it. This year, we were really blessed. We started on Monday with only 25 or so kids, which was discouraging to us, as we had prayed for 60 . . . but, by Friday, we had around 55, which for a church that only has about 6-7 church kids is pretty good! The best part was that we had a lot of diversity in the group of kids, and most of them we had never seen before! Pray that they come back for church or our AWANA group so we can continue to minister to them.
Anyway, each year I lead the singing time as well as do the Bible teaching time. Kids are in groups and they rotate to four different stations, one of which is Bible story, and that's what I lead. This year, our theme was "prayer" and, let me tell you . . . I learned as much as the kids this year from our lessons! It went along very nicely with the Bible study some of my friends and I have been doing this summer about prayer. Here are a few of the highlights from our lessons:
Monday: Jesus prayed FIRST THING in the morning before he did anything else. Before a shower, before breakfast or turning on the TV. Hm . . . maybe I should do that more.
Tuesday: Start your prayer with adoration and praise. We looked up several first verses from chapters of Psalms and noticed that they all start with "Praise the Lord." I think David knew a thing or two about prayer.
Wednesday: Confess your sins next.
Thursday/Friday: Pray for others first (intercession) and then do supplication.
I love teaching kids about our walk with Christ, especially when it's all stuff I need reminders of myself! :)
